She looked out the window and sighed, wondering why she felt this way. There was everything available to her to be herself. To go for everything she wanted. But all she wanted to do was to sleep. She took off her spectacles. Sleep! Sleep! She smiled.
Suddenly the phone rang. She looked at it and ignored it. I don’t feel like talking, she thought. She looked out the window again wondering why she felt the need to keep looking outside. Suddenly, she saw it. Something was trapped in the yard outside. It looked like an animal. She looked hard again. Nothing moved. Maybe it’s nothing that she needs to be bothered about. She shrugged, then pulled the duvet over her head. The phone rang again. She took her phone and changed the focus to “do not disturb.”
She moved around a few times in bed trying to settle into a comfortable position then she heard it. A beeping sound. It started as a continuous beep. Then changed into an intermittent one, like the kind you hear when fire alarms are being tested. She took the duvet off her head and looked out again. There was nothing. No outside. It was just her. The phone was a half-cracked brick. The beeping meant it was yet another day trapped. And her mind was getting away from her. The mind bubble she had been living in has slowly faded to reveal the cold hard brown walls that enclosed her tiny living space. The duvet was nothing but a washed down, tattered, old raincoat she had on her that fateful day.
She looked down to confirm again. Yes. She had no legs. She stifled a cry and put the spectacles back on. Living in her mind was surely better than what this was.
